Depoe Bay Oregon Whale Watching Capitol
Depoe Bay Oregon is the whale watching capitol of Oregon. It is surrounded by cliffs and state parks. Ten months out of the year Gray Whales make their home here. Tour vessels can be found here providing ideal opportunities to observe these whales and other animals. Last Septemeber my husband and I went out on a whale watching boat. We didn’t see any whales but we saw jelly fish, sea lions, birds and other animals. The weather was beautiful. It was nice just to be out on the boat at sea on such a sunny day.
Depoe Bay is the world’s smallest fishing harbor. The port is 5 1/4 acres but has been a safe harbor for many years. Getting into the port does involve strategy. The entrance is made of stone and is less than 50 feet wide and more than 100 feet long. Boats trying to navigate the waters of the coast are often referred to as shooting the hole. This risk has sometimes caused devastating effects.
Depoe Bay has been a safe harbor for fishing for years. Today it is a home and stopping point for charter vessels and private launches. Visitors like to stand on the bridge and walkways to observe vessels.
Fogarty Creek State Recreation Area and Rocky Creek State Scenic Viewpoint are on either side of Depoe Bay. These parks provide scenic locations for viewing wildlife. In town you’ll find shopping, dining and vacation accomodations. RV parks and camping spots are also found close by. Newport is one of the most popular coastal towns and is only 15 miles south of Depoe Bay.
