Things to See in Newport

We have taken several trips to Newport. It is probably one of our favorite places to go. It is relaxing and part of the Oregon coast so there are lots of beaches to walk on. There are lots of interesting things to see.

We had went this past weekend looking for the city wide garage sales. We looked at the visitor center and the Chamber of Commerce for maps but didn’t find any. We were only able to find a few garage sales, but the Oregon coast is always fun.

We walked a long Nye beach and found something new. Newport has added a little downtown part sort of like the bayfront to Nye beach. There were shops and cafes and galleries. It looked like they were adding more to it. We didn’t get to look at everything but it was neat to see.

Of course we went to the bayfront and checked out the candy shops and some of the galleries. We also went and looked at the seals on the docks. The only sad part was one of the seals had been caught in a net. It survived but the netting was embedded in its neck. The poor seal looked so pathetic. I hope someone puts it out of its misery soon. The seal wouldn’t go in the water or eat or make noise. It looked like it was in such pain and there was a chunk of flesh hanging from where the net was around its neck. That was pretty gross. A lot of people were disturbed by this so I’m sure someone will help the poor creature out. The other seals were having a good time barking and showing off for the visitors.

The next time I go I think I will check out the museum and of course the Nye beach area. We camped overnight and that turned out good so we will do that again too. If you are looking for a relaxing place to visit try Newport. Don’t forget Ripleys, the Wax Works and the Oregon Coast Aquarium. There is also the Hatfield Marine Science Center and that’s free.
